It’s nearly summer and for those red hot months ahead we are heading to our mother land – Bulgaria. Ah, the beautiful Balkans – so much to do and see around here! Hiking in the mighty Rila mountain, following the steps of the Romans while picking up fresh berries along the way. Or road tripping along Stara Planina down to the golden sands off the coast of Black sea. Fantastic stuff, however, as we do need to work, so the weekend is the only time we’ve got for taking a trip or two .
The place to be this weekend is ‘Kapana’ Fest in Plovdiv! Fest is short for festival and that is the only short thing about it because every year, this event is an abundance of culture, music, food and fun for all. And when we say for all, it is literally for every single person who wants to shake up the mundane and celebrate the beginning of summer.
‘Kapana’ Fest is indeed a celebration, or as its organizers say – ‘it is a bridge between tradition, the present and the future’.
‘Kapana’ is located in Plovdiv – the second biggest city in Bulgaria and European capital of Culture for 2019. ‘Kapana’ or “the Trap”, is a small neighbourhood with narrow streets which emerged as a craftsmen district some 5 centuries ago! Ever since it has become the soul of the city. Off festival, it is still one of the most colourful and diverse places in the whole of Bulgaria! Small, authentic shops are scattered around the paved streets of Kapana – you can have an amazing craft beer while browsing for the perfect piece of hand-made jewellery. ‘Kapana’ itself is the jewel of Plovdiv and whether you live on Bulgarian lands or are just here for a visit, it is something every local would recommend to visit.
‘Kapana’ fest is a three day event and every year it brings together more than 40 000 people from all over the world. This year different stages will showcase alternative Bulgarian musicians and bands – from rock to electro. There are food and crafts bazaars as well, while cinema lovers can enjoy some of the most interesting titles of Bulgarian short films (with English subtitles of course). ‘Kapana’ is not really your usual boozy fest as it also has a space where a team of professional athletes will take care of those wanting to exercise on the spot! And not to forget the literature spot where emerging young authors will do a series of short readings.
But Kapana is so much more than that. It’s a place where people celebrate diversity, culture and most importantly, the joy of summer. It’s a place where you share a beer with a total stranger who doesn’t even speak your language; a place to discover a cool new designer or fall in love with a taste! Kapana is soul food!
Catch us in Plovdiv at ‘Kapana’ fest this weekend, 2 – 4 June. Bettr will be there to spread some coconut love!
